Electroacupuncturing jiaji points prolongs the lifespan of ALS-SOD1G93A mice

<p style="text-align: center;">(1&nbsp; 2<sup>nd</sup>&nbsp;Affiliated Hospital of Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese&nbsp; Medicine, Harbin&nbsp;150001,China;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align: center;">2 Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Harbin 150040,China )</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Abstract</strong>:&nbsp; <strong>Objective</strong>:&nbsp; Electroacupuncturing&nbsp; jiaji&nbsp; points(ex-b2)&nbsp; has&nbsp; been&nbsp; used&nbsp; in&nbsp; ALS&nbsp; patients&nbsp; clinically&nbsp; in China.&nbsp; Data&nbsp; shows&nbsp; that&nbsp; the&nbsp; motor&nbsp; funtion&nbsp; of&nbsp; ALS&nbsp; patient&nbsp; improved&nbsp; significantly&nbsp; by&nbsp; this&nbsp; therapy.&nbsp; To investigate the treatment effects, include onset, survival and motor function, etal., a control experiment was performanted to test the effects of&nbsp; electroacupuncture at jiaji points(ex-b2) of ALS SOD1<sup>G93A</sup> mice.&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Methods</strong>: ALS SOD1<sup> G93A&nbsp;</sup>transgenic mice were treated by electroacupuncture at jiaji points (ex-b2) with the electrial stimulation&nbsp; at the frequency of 2HZ from the age of d60, 20min/time, 2 times/week for 4 weeks. The treatment effet was compared with the control group disposed by binding, seizing and nipping the mouse hair at the jiaji points(ex-b2) at the same time. In this study, we proceeded Tail Suspension Test, Turn-club Test to investigated the onset of the disease,survival time of the mice and motor function during the process of the disease, 2 times/week from the age of d60 to the end event occurrence. All the data&nbsp; obtained&nbsp; through&nbsp; aforementioned&nbsp; procedure&nbsp; was&nbsp; analyzed&nbsp; by&nbsp; the&nbsp; using&nbsp; of&nbsp; SPSS&nbsp; 17.0,&nbsp; gaussian distribution was test first for every group.Data which is in accordance with normal distribution proceeded with independent-samples t test subsequently, and data that is not conform to the normal distribution were going on with rank sum test. Results of the analysis presented as mean value±standard deviation;KaplanMeier&nbsp; Survival&nbsp; analysis&nbsp; was&nbsp; proceeded&nbsp; to&nbsp; analyze&nbsp; the&nbsp; survival&nbsp; datas.&nbsp; We&nbsp; setted&nbsp; p<0.05&nbsp; stands&nbsp; for&nbsp; the&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align: justify;">difference has significant meaning. Results: 1. Analysis of onset and survival time: EA group shows the delay of&nbsp; the&nbsp; onset&nbsp; of&nbsp; the&nbsp; disease&nbsp; for&nbsp; 9&nbsp; days&nbsp; compared&nbsp; with&nbsp; the&nbsp; control&nbsp; group,&nbsp; the&nbsp; difference&nbsp; has&nbsp; significant meaning(p<&nbsp; 0.01), and the EA group shows a prolong of the survival time of ALS mice for 7 days compared with&nbsp; the&nbsp; control&nbsp; group,&nbsp; the&nbsp; difference&nbsp; has&nbsp; significant&nbsp; meaning(p<0.01).&nbsp; &nbsp; 2.&nbsp; Analysis&nbsp; of&nbsp; Weight:Data shows that mice weight of EA group was higher than that of the control group from the age of week21, difference has significant meaning(p<0.05).&nbsp; &nbsp; 3. Analysis of Turn-club Test:residence time has declined since the mice age of week16 in control group, and since the mice age of week17 in EA group.residence time of EA group is significantly longer than that of the control group from the age of week16,difference has&nbsp; significant meaning(p<0.05). <strong>Conclusion</strong>: 1)Electroacupuncture&nbsp; at&nbsp; jiaji&nbsp; points(ex-b2)delays&nbsp; the onset&nbsp; of&nbsp; the&nbsp; disease&nbsp; and&nbsp; prolong&nbsp; the&nbsp; survival&nbsp; time&nbsp; of&nbsp; the&nbsp; ALS&nbsp; SOD1<sup>G93A </sup>transgenic&nbsp; mice. 2)Electroacupuncture at jiaji points(ex-b2) improve motor function of the ALS SOD1<sup>G93A</sup> transgenic mice.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Key words</strong>: Electroacupuncture, Jiaji points(ex-b2), Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Survival time&nbsp;</p><p><br/></p>
